Western Adaptation Alliance Network Strengthening Webinar with Pete Plastrik, Innovation Network for Communities
This webinar is the third in a series of virtual workshops serving the Western Adaptation Alliance (WAA), a “learning network” of eleven local governments across the Front Range, Intermountain and Desert Southwest Region of the Western United States which have self-organized to collaborate on the increasingly urgent challenge of preparing urban areas in arid/semi-arid environments for the impacts of global climate change.
The webinar was set up to help with generating ideas for how to strengthen the WAA learning network so as to maximize the value and benefits it provides to its membership. During first half of the webinar, Pete shares a general overview of networks and how they function, using specific data from the most recent WAA network survey.- Climate Adaptation & Resilience

The Colorado River Basin Study – Considering Scenarios for Managing Western Water Supply & Demand in an Uncertain Future
Presenter: Carly Jerla, Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of the Interior
This webinar was the first in a series of virtual workshops serving the Western Adaptation Alliance (WAA), a “learning network” of eleven local governments across the Front Range, Intermountain and Desert Southwest Region of the Western United States which have self-organized to collaborate on the increasingly urgent challenge of preparing urban areas in arid/semi-arid environments for the impacts of global climate change. WAA member communities and interested colleagues were invited to view a presentation on the Colorado River Basin Study (http://www.usbr.gov/lc/region/programs/crbstudy.html) and participate in a facilitated conversation on implications these findings present for water resource management in Western cities. Participants learned about the scenario planning approach used in the study, considered options and strategies the study explored to help resolve water supply and demand imbalances, and offered input to the Bureau of Reclamation.
PLEASE NOTE: The first several minutes of this webinar recording contains some audio distortion. To skip forward to Carly’s full presentation, please advance the video to minute 8:11.- Climate Adaptation & Resilience

Opportunity Mapping in Mississippi's Gulf Coast
Over the past decade, social scientists at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University (OSU) have developed the "Communities of Opportunity" framework. This framework, and specifically the opportunity mapping tool, allow planners to visualize the geospatial distribution of equity issues. The Kirwan Institute is now working with planners along Mississippi's Gulf Coast to utilize this tool in conjunction with their regional planning efforts funded through a HUD Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant. This tool is enabling planners in the three coastal counties to better understand the equity issues in their region and to remove barriers, find solutions, and create opportunities for regional prosperity.
