The History of the Cleveland HealthLine
A presentation by Joe Calabrese at the Climate Leadership Academy on Accelerating Bus Rapid Transit in Cleveland, Ohio, March26-28, 2012
Joe Calabrese has spent over 30 years in both the public and private sectors of the public transit industry. Leaving his position as President and CEO of the Central New York RTA, Joe Calabrese was named the CEO and General Manager/Secretary-Treasurer of the Greater Cleveland RTA in 2000. With a motto of "back to the basics", he led an aggressive bus replacement program, rail system upgrade program, and increased emphasis on image, financial management and enhanced customer service. The result has been a turn-around of RTA's image and ridership.Mar 26, 2012

Get There PGH
Inspired by Cleveland's Healthline BRT, the Port Authority of Allegheny County and 30 stakeholders are now working on the development of their first on-street BRT system through a collaborative campaign called "GET THERE PGH." The Emerald Express
The Lane Transit District (LTD) has made a strong commitment to implementing a network of bus rapid transit (BRT) services in the cities of Eugene and Springfield, Oregon. They have developed two BRT corridors, and plan for two more routes. Ridership along the corridors has already exceeded 20 year goals, and the region has successfully secured the maximum levels of federal funding available in building the first two lines. Yet, LTD's successes have not been without challenges. They have had to adjust from their role as a bus operator to that of transit infrastructure developer, and have encountered new opposition from groups opposed to the BRT concept. This case study chronicles the development of BRT within LTD, and documents lessons learned and best practices that have helped make BRT successful in the region.Mar 26, 2012
