    Workshop Opportunity

    The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) invites teams of 5-7 senior officials and key stakeholders from up to 12 U.S. cities and metropolitan regions to participate in the Sustainable Communities Leadership Academy (SCLA), Creating Connected Communities.

    Communities across the U.S. are recognizing the benefits of building a multi-modal transportation system that creates connections between housing, jobs, services and amenities. Whether served by light rail, streetcar, BRT, a bus network, or a combination thereof, communities that offer a robust transit system and walkable, bikeable neighborhoods, are proving to be more economically resilient, healthy, more affordable, and more climate-friendly.

    This peer-learning and training workshop will bring together cross-sector, inter-jurisdictional teams of practitioners from regions across the country to learn, share, and strategize around how to create and sustain a multi-modal transportation network that contributes to economic prosperity, sustainability, and social equity. The workshop will explore the challenges of creating an interconnected multi-modal system, including building public support for transit, integrating transportation investment with land use and economic development, and financing transportation projects and programs (including the implications of the new federal transportation bill).

    Who Should Apply?

    Creating a robust, multi-modal transportation network that supports a vibrant community requires a planning approach that works across organizations, sectors and jurisdictions. To reflect this, each region is invited to bring a diverse team of 5-7 senior officials and practitioners who are best positioned to transform knowledge and information from the Sustainable Communities Leadership Academy into tangible, on-the-ground improvements once they return home. When filling out the application teams must assign a person to be the team captain who will be the primary point of contact with ISC. While the composition of your team will depend on the specific challenges and opportunities in your region, we anticipate that each team will include:

    • a Senior local transportation official
    • a Senior regional/sta te transportation official
    • a Senior official that works at the nexus of land use, economic development, and/or the environment
    • a Public transportation provider

    In addition, depending on your region’s particular challenges or needs, your team may also include:

    • a Transportation advocacy group leader (environmental focus, equity focus, or both)
    • a Political leader interested in advancing public transit
    • a Funder/foundation director
    • a Private sector partner/leader or business group leader

    Why Participate?

    The workshop will build the capacity of teams of practitioners and help them create strong partnerships that will support their work to plan, build, finance, and manage a multi-modal transportation network. The workshop, and the resource guide that will accompany it, will provide efficient access to the best available information on sustainable transportation, offer opportunities to learn from your peers and national experts, and allow you to strategize with your team. By leaving daily responsibilities behind and working with your team for two and a half days, you will have the chance to cement new relationships and return home with a shared understanding about what needs to be done. Unlike other events where individuals attend alone, the SCLA creates powerful team building experience, which can last long after the event.

    Unlike a traditional conference, the agenda for the SCLA will be shaped by the teams that attend. Over the next two months, ISC will consult with the selected teams and other national leaders to develop an agenda that is customized to the needs and wants of those who attend. Highlights of this workshop will include the following:

    • A diverse mix of teams of practitioners from across the country;
    • A blend of interactive panel discussions and small-group working sessions focused on key innovations and challenges such as:
      1. How to link transportation, land use, and economic development to support a     vibrant community while reducing climate emissions;
      2. How to improve connections and create an effective multi-modal system;
      3. How to build public support for sustainable transportation investments;
      4. How to increase ridership and build public support for transit systems, and
      5. How to finance transportation projects/programs.
    • Time for networking, learning and strategizing within and across teams;
    • A resource team consisting of leading national experts and practitioners;
    • A resource guide, synthesizing best available information and promising practices, through a selection of case studies exemplifying good work in the field and lists of key resources for local leaders.
